Are you frightened or confused when you hear that our democracy is under attack? Losing our democracy means losing our freedom. This means losing the right to vote, the right to choose our leaders. If we can’t choose our leaders, democracy dies and will be replaced by authoritarianism. The evidence of this is now blatant and undeniable. Nineteen states have passed laws that make it harder for millions of people in our country to vote. Powerful forces are working to oust the Democratic and Republican Secretaries of State who carry out their duties lawfully, and replace them with politicians who seek to manipulate our political system. And attacks on educators and historians who teach the truth and tell the truth are escalating. This is real and frightening, but there is a lot we can do to reclaim the truth, stop voter suppression and fight for our democracy.
Not standing up to the attacks on democracy will hurt us all. If authoritarianism takes control:
• Voting will become harder or impossible for more and more of us.
• There will be more restrictions on abortion and women’s healthcare rights.
• Speech, Curriculum, Books and Media will be censored.
• Racism, sexism, and homophobia will increase.
• Your material and financial assets can be seized at any time.
• Incarceration can occur for any or no reason.
• The climate crisis will accelerate
